Ian graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 1978 and, after a brief time in the lighting business, began his career in the brewing industry with Allied Lyons (formerly Allied Breweries) at Romford Brewery, in 1980. He moved to Alloa Brewery, in 1992, as Chief Engineer.
In 1996, after Allied’s brewing operations had merged with Carlsberg, Ian relocated to Leeds and oversaw the expansion of production at Tetley’s Brewery, to an annual capacity of 2 million barrels. He left Carlsberg-Tetley in 2001, by which time he held a national post as External Contract Brewing and Packaging Manager, taking responsibility for organising supplementary production and the transfer of brands from the company’s sold-off Burton brewery, either to Tetley’s in Leeds or to permanent outsourcing.
From 2001 to 2003, Ian worked as a Project Manager for the BI Group of Burton, where he was responsible for design and installation projects at Arla Foods’ dairy in Essex and Timothy Taylor’s Brewery in Keighley, and for several other feasibility studies.
In 2003, Ian was appointed Chief Engineer at Daniel Thwaites Brewery in Blackburn. Two years later he became Production & Distribution Director. He took charge of the installation of the ‘Crafty Dan’ craft brewery and inspired many monthly, seasonal and more experimental beers. But when Thwaites outsourced the bulk of their production to Marston’s in 2014, Ian chose to leave and, following a short spell with a supplier, became a freelance consultant later that same year.
Ian is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD). He is also a committee member of the Gt Northern section of the IBD and an examiner for Module 4 (Resources & Compliance) of the Institute’s Master Brewer programme. He has judged beer at BIA, CBC, European Star and SIBA events.
